Replace labels with specific observations
Instead of “You are not a math person,” identify the exact challenge: fractions, multiplication facts, translating words into equations or organizing steps.
Ask for the method, not only the answer
Questions such as “What do you know?” and “Which step feels unclear?” help the student think without taking over the work.
Use mistakes as information
A repeated error reveals what needs to be retaught. Correct one pattern at a time, then practise it in several forms.
When tutoring may help
Consider tutoring when the student repeatedly avoids the subject, cannot explain current work, or needs a structured plan before the next course.
